The Art of Cosmetic Dentistry

Critical components of an attractive smile:

Harmony - The teeth should match the face with the proper shape, size, and contour. The teeth should be properly proportioned and shaped to each other.

Symmetry - The left and right side should balance each other closely.

Negative Space - Space where there is no tooth structure displayed is called negative space. We need some, but only in the right places. For instance, buccal (cheek) corridors are the shadows at the corners of the mouth - this is good negative space. When the teeth totally fill the negative space an unnatural "false" look always results. Unwanted negative space includes such things as gaps between the teeth and excessively short or worn down and broken teeth.

Teeth & gum relationship - This is one of the most important components that should be evaluated and altered if necessary. Proper tissue heights and progressive tissue angles of adjacent teeth are critical for optimal results.

Teeth to lips relationship - Teeth should be sized and contoured to properly match lip contours

Color and brilliance - There is no such thing as purely white teeth in nature. Even the most beautiful white teeth are a blend of colors, hues, brightness, and translucency.
